The new Air Force PT Test guidelines are here. Airmen can now choose which tests they want to take during their annual physical fitness assessment. Some components from the previous test remain, including the timed 1.5-mile run, the pushups, and the situps. However, the waist measurement has been removed.
Additional changes include adding new test options in lieu of the standard 1.5-mile run, pushups, and situps, as well as 5-year age groupings instead of the previous 10-year age groupings.
Here are the components of the new Air Force Physical Assessment (choose one from each category):
- Cardio Test: 1.5-mile run or 20-meter HAMR (high aerobic multi-shuttle run)
- Strength Test: Push-ups or hand-release push-ups
- Core Strength / Endurance Test: Sit-ups, cross-legged reverse crunches, or forearm planks
The 1.5-mile run, pushups, and situps follow the previous guidelines, however, there are new score charts for each of these components. The HAMR is a timed shuttle run – Airmen must complete as many shuttles as they can to the rhythm of a timed beep. The test ends when the Airman doesn’t complete the shuttle run for three consecutive beeps. Airmen have two minutes to complete as many hand-release (HR) pushups as possible, two minutes to perform cross-legged reverse crunches, and the forearm planks are scored by the duration the member holds the form.
Air Force PT Test Passing Requirements
The test scores are broken down as follows:
- Cardio Test: 60 points
- Strength Test: 20 points
- Core Strength / Endurance Test: 20 points
To pass, you must score a combined minimum of 75 points across all three tests, while scoring at least the minimum requirement on each test.
Your total score will fall into one of these three ranges:
- Excellent: 90 or more total points
- Satisfactory: 75-89.9 total points
- Unsatisfactory: less than 75 total points.
Failing to pass the PT test will place the Airman on a watch list, with the possibility of being separated from the Air Force if the member fails too many tests. You can see the full guidelines in DAFMAN 36-2905.
