The updated Air Force fitness program guidelines were recently published, bringing a few changes to the test options and procedures. Gone are the waist measurement and the 10-year age groups. In their place, Airmen are now scored in 5-year age groups and they have additional test options for each of the three categories of tests (cardio, strength, and endurance).
Airmen must choose one assessment from each of the following three categories:
- Cardio Test: 1.5-mile run or 20-meter HAMR (high aerobic multi-shuttle run)
- Strength Test: Push-ups or hand-release push-ups
- Core Strength / Endurance Test: Sit-ups, cross-legged reverse crunches, or forearm planks
The cardio portion of the test continues to be worth 60 points. However, the strength and endurance portions of the test are now worth 20 points each, doubling their importance compared to the previous version of the AF fitness test.
The 1.5-mile run, pushups, and situps follow the same procedures as the prior fitness test.
The HAMR is a 20-meter timed shuttle run. You must run from one line to the next to the pace of a prerecorded beep. The test ends when you fail to complete the shuttle run for three consecutive beeps.
You have two minutes to complete as many HR Pushups as possible, two minutes to complete as many cross-legged reverse crunches as possible, or you can hold the forearm plank which is graded on the duration of your hold, maxing out at around 3:30, depending on your age group and gender.
Air Force PT Test Passing Requirements
Each portion of the Air Force fitness test is scored as follows:
- Cardio Test: 60 points
- Strength Test: 20 points
- Core Strength / Endurance Test: 20 points
You must score a minimum of 75 points to pass the PT assessment. You must also score at least the minimum required score on all three portions of the PT test.
Air Force Fitness Assessment scoring ranges:
- Excellent: 90 or more total points
- Satisfactory: 75-89.9 total points
- Unsatisfactory: less than 75 total points.
An Unsatisfactory score is a failure and may result in administrative action. Multiple fitness test failures may result in dismissal from the Air Force. The full guidelines are found in DAFMAN 36-2905.
